#C01 - Can the SEZ Channel include my favorite team's roster?

Yes, absolutely! This feature was introduced for the 2006 season. The channel now includes complete rosters of all 32 teams.

#C02 - How big is the SEZ Channel? How much space will it use on my PDA?

The base channel (scores, schedules, standings, etc) is under 300KB. On top of that, there are other options that will increase the size. It's important to note that the size will vary week to week, as content changes. Consider the following chart as of 01-Sep-2006:

Size Description Notes
300 KB base channel content all full version subscribers get this
2,450 KB
2,150 KB roster data
300 KB other page 2 data
turn the "Page 2" option on/off in preferences
50 KB pre-season schedule/scores turn the "Pre-Season" option on/off in preferences
2,800 KB total

#E01 - When I hot sync, I get the message "Page Not Available".

There are a couple of things to consider for this. Try these:

channel manager

  1. On occasion, this was solved by users clearing the SEZ Channel (which completey removes all channel content from your PDA) and synchronizing again. To do this, go into the Channel Manager in AvantGo on your PDA, and select the option to clear the South End Zone channel. The exact steps to do this will vary based on your operating system; it may look something like this screen shot (if so, just click the checkbox and click the "Clear" button). Note that this is different than clearing the cache.

  2. You may also have the Channel Size Limit set too low. This is a very flexible channel. You have the option of including pre-season games as well as turning on Page 2 (which gives you access to even more data). Also, Packer fans will have a larger channel due to the roster (see #C02 above). Of course, if you do include all of this content, it requires more space on your palm device.

Be sure to review the channel size chart above. Based on how you have your preferences set, figure out about how big the channel should be. Add 50-100 KB to allow for size fluctuations and figure out how much space you should allow for the channel.

To change your max size allotment for the SEZ Channel, login to your AvantGo account at avantgo.com/login. Click on "My Account", then click on "Manage your subscriptions", then click on "South End Zone NFL". Set the maximum size for the SEZ Channel to what you figured out. Leave it at that setting for a while and see how it works.

#E02 - I don't want to increase the size of the channel to 700K (see above). That's too much.

Well, you don't have to. Here's how that works. The developers at AvantGo are smart. They could have just set it up so that there is no such thing as a size limit. Then, when you hot sync, you would just get the entire channel. This means you'd never have a problem with missing pages, etc.

However, as an AvantGo user myself, on several occasions, I have hot sync'd and found that a page on a certain channel was accidentally linked to a page that was not designed for use on a Palm. For example, there was a link labeled "Contact Us" which was mistakenly linked to their regular "Contact" page on their full web site. Well, from that page, they then had links to the main page of their web site, which of course linked to all the other pages on their entire web site. This is not good. Much of their entire web site started downloading to my Palm device.

This is why the user is allowed to set the maximum channel size. This setting prevents any one channel from going haywire and filling up all the space on your Palm device.

So, my suggestion to increase the maximum channel size for SEZ to 700K is just that, a suggestion. It will allow you to see the actual size of the channel on your device, based on your own settings (pre-season games, future opponents, etc). Then, once you know the exact size of the channel, it's much easier to manage it.

#E03 - How can I increase the link depth for the SEZ Channel?

You can't. This is defined by me. The current link depth is 4, and that is plenty for all of the content in the channel.

#E04 - Why doesn't the SEZ Channel show scores from yesterday's games?

The first thing you should know is that I update the data in the channel very diligently, every week. I update all of the Sunday games late Sunday night, and I do another update after the Monday Night game. There are a couple of things that could cause these updates to not appear on your device in a timely manner:

  1. Caching. This can be a tricky subject to understand, so listen carefully.

One of the great features of AvantGo is caching. Simply put, AvantGo downloads a complete copy of the SEZ Channel and stores it on their servers. So, let's say there are a thousand SEZ subscribers. When all of you hot sync the channel on Tuesday morning, those updates are served from AvantGo's cache. In other words, my server is not hit thousands of times for the same data. So caching is a very important (and very necessary) feature for a web site developer like me. It greatly reduces the strain on my server, especially when you have a channel that has become very popular like the SEZ Channel.

So the question really is, "when will AvantGo update its cache of the channel?" You should know that I update the data in the channel very diligently, every week. And the timing of when AvantGo's servers update their cache'd version of the channel is completely controlled by me. Most data in the SEZ Channel is set to expire after 12 hours. So, if I update the channel data with all of the new scores and standings on Sunday night, you might not see that update until somtime Monday.

AvantGo also is very smart, in that it does not download a page if your device already has the most recent version of it.

There are other technical factors that directly affect the timing of the updates, but those get a bit too technical. Suffice it to say that some updates may take up to 12 hours to make it to your handheld device.

  2. Channel Refresh Settings. Login to your AvantGo account at avantgo.com/login. Click on "Manage your subscriptions", then click on South End Zone NFL. Look at your "Channel Refresh" settings. This allows you to configure how often you want to update the channel. For example, you can set it to refresh only once per day at a specfied time, or maybe only on Tuesdays. Just make sure this setting matches your needs.

  3. UPDATE: Beginning on Oct 17, 2004, I made a major change to how the SEZ channel data is stored, and how/when it is cached. I won't bore you with the details. What it means to you is that when I update the channel data, you should see those updates on your PDA almost immediately (well, at least the next time you synchronize).

  4. Contact Me. If the above scenarios don't help you resolve your problem, let me know via my contact page. Be sure to give me your AvantGo user id! Without it, I can't do any troubleshooting.

#G01 - Why isn't the SEZ Channel available through programs like iSilo?

The simple answer is 'caching' (see above).

All iSilo users hit the channel directly, without the benefit of a cache server in the middle. And every time they hit the channel, they download the ENTIRE channel all at once. There is no consideration at all for the fact that they might already have the most recent version of much of the channel content. This is just too much strain on my server, so I don't allow it. AvantGo allows me to maintain a much more controlled environment.

#G02 - I used to get the full version of SEZ Channel, and now I'm only seeing the basic version on my PDA. Or, the SEZ Channel data has not updated in over a week. What's up?

This happens to many users. You're not alone. And the good thing is that this is simple to fix. In all cases like this that I've investigated, every single one of them was caused by their AvantGo user id changing. Recall that when you subscribed to the SEZ Channel, you had to give me your AvantGo user id. This is so that my program knows that you should get the full version (instead of the free basic version) when you synchronize.

So, why does your AvantGo user id change? Well, I can't tell you that. Maybe you changed it yourself. Some people tell me that after their PDA crashed, they had to create a new AvantGo user id. Some people have told me that when they switched from Palm to Pocket PC (or vice versa), they had to create a new AvantGo user id. Whatever the reason, if your AvantGo user id has changed, then we need to transfer your SEZ subscription from your old id to your new id. Again, this is very simple.

You should also know that in the SEZ Channel, your user id is case sensitve. Let me say that again because it is very important. In the SEZ Channel, your user id is case sensitve. This may not be the case in AvantGo itself.

So, for example, let's say your AvantGo user id is 'Football_Fan', so that's the ID you gave me when you subscribed to the SEZ Channel. Now, for some reason, your user id in AvantGo changes to 'football_fan' (or anything else). If this happens, your SEZ subscription will revert to the basic version, because it's still expecting you to use 'Football_Fan' for your user id.

So, the bottom line is that if your AvantGo user id changes even slightly, for any reason at all, your SEZ Channel subscription will revert back to the basic version. But don't worry, you don't have to re-subscribe. All we need to do is transfer your subscription from your old user id to your new user id.

To find out your current AvantGo user id, go to this web page and login. It will then tell you something like "You are currently logged in as your_user_id." This is your new user id.

To find out your old user id, go to the SEZ Channel on your PDA, and click the "Pref" link at the bottom of the first page. Your old user id will display in red.

Now, enter both user ids here. Before you click the submit button, double check your spelling and capitalization:

#P01 - What methods of payment do you accept for subscriptions?

I accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, PayPal, and checks. If you pay by credit card or PayPal, then your subscription will be activated in real time, and you will get the full version of the SEZ channel the next time you hot sync. You are also welcome to send me a check, in which case your subscription will be activated as soon as I receive your payment. I prefer credit card payments.

Visa MasterCard American Express PayPal Check

#P02 - I'm having trouble with the online order process. What should I do?

Call me at (920) 983-8300. However, I'm not in my office 24 hours a day (I gotta to go Lambeau Field once in a while). So, if I'm not here, please leave me a message and I'll call you back. I appreciate your patience.

#P03 - I paid for the full version; why am I still getting the basic version on my palm device?

Well, you shouldn't be. This is usually due to timing. When you complete the online purchase process, your user profile on my system is immediately updated to reflect your purchase. So the very next time you synchronize, you should see the full version.

This can also happen if you provide the wrong user id when you subscribe to the full version. For example, if your AvantGo user id is "MyUser" and you enter "myuser" for the SEZ subscription, then your channel will not be upgraded. User IDs are definitely case sensitive. If you need to transfer your subscription from the wrong user id to the correct one, see also #G02 above for more information.

If the full version is not appearing, please try again the next day. Due to some configurations, it may take until then for the new pages to load on your palm device. If you still don't have the full version the following day, please call me toll-free at (866) 983-8400. This can usually be resolved over the phone pretty quickly. Make sure you have your device right there and that you can sync up while we're talking.

#Z01 - I'm having a problem that is not addressed here. What should I do?

First of all, please understand that I truly do want to help you solve the problem. So, tell me about it. Please submit your info on my contact page, and I'll look into it for you. I will respond to you just as soon as possible.
