I was there.

my ticket This was an awesome game! I've been in California for 12 years and I was able to make the trip to see the game and it just does not get any better than that. I know Super Bowls are much more noteworthy and provide a more cherished trophy, but this was a championship game at Lambeau Field. Man, did I feel the power!

You may not have been able to see the game in person, but I know you watched it and I know I'm not the only one who had tears in my eyes when Chmura hugged Favre as Brett left the field near the end of the 4th quarter.

This is what we mean when we say that we bleed Green and Gold.

I hope I don't bore you here but I'm gonna go ahead and say a few things about my trip. If you're not interested, then bail now. Otherwise, read on.

Friday night

I took a red-eye out of LAX on Friday night. On my connecting flight from Minneapolis to Titletown, I sat right next to Jerry Seeman, Director of Officiating for the NFL. He wore his two Super Bowl rings (from the games he officiated), and he sported a slick NFL Super Bowl XXIII watch. He was on his way to see the game too. What a nice guy. We talked about instant replay (he agrees with me and does not like it), the game in general, Green Bay, etc.

As we descended upon Green Bay, the winds were a little stronger than usual, so we had to swing around and come into the airport from the east. At least that's what they said. I think the pilot did this purposely because we flew right over Lambeau Field and this generated the first tears of the weekend. What a view! I wish I had my camera handy.

Saturday

Saturday was typical. I met up with my good friend (and uncle) Bob Olson, who put me up for the weekend. For dinner, we went to Kroll's East for the usual burger with everything (even butter), a bowl of chili (with spagetti) and deep-fried cheese curds. It was simply awesome! Went to the 50 Yard Line that night for some beers. I finally met Adam Simpson, a great guy who I met on the net a few months back. It's interesting to put a face to a name and I'm glad I was able to meet him in person (well, okay he bought me a beer so I figured I'd give him a plug).

Then we went to The Glory Years. If you haven't seen this yet, you must. It's a bar at the south end of Washington street downtown, in the building where Lombardi and his staff had their offices. You can actually stand in the room where Lombardi worked! What a feeling. And the bar is full of cool memorabilia. A must see if you're in town.

After this we went to Fuzzy's Shenanigans. You probably know that this is owned by Fuzzy Thurston (#63). This place was packed! Channel 2 was doing a show, I think it was called The Road To New Orleans. The show featured a few live shots from Fuzzy's. As you may know, Fuzzy cannot talk normally (I believe complications from throat cancer), so when he wanted it quiet in there (for the live feed), he stood behind the bar and raised his hands like he was parting the Red Sea. He did not even need to say a word. Everyone immediately shut up. He was like a God! Anyway, we got on TV but then left right away because it was too crowded to even think about getting a beer.

On the way back to Bob's house, we happened to drive through the downtown area, past a church on the corner of Howe and Monroe. I think it was the First United Methodist Church. On the little marquee out front, it said "CHEESEHEADS WORSHIP HERE, OTHERS WELCOME TOO". It just confirmed my thoughts that this town is totally nuts and I'm proud to call it home.

Sunday

Me with Dave Zimmerman We got to the stadium around 9:10am. As is tradition, the parking lot was already smoking with the smell of brats on the grill and the sounds of loyal Packer fans enjoying a beer and trying to stay warm. Bob and I had just planned to walk around the lot, take in the sites, and maybe scam a beer off of some friends. You may know that the license plate on my Ford Ranger says LAMBEAU, so I couldn't help but to wear the plate proudly around my neck as we walked around.

It was a pretty typical walk. We stopped and enjoyed talking about some of the painted cars/trucks, met up with some old friends, checked out the party that America's Pack put on, visited the Pro Shop, and basically enjoyed the pre-game festivities. Then, out of no where, a guy walked up to me, looked at the California license plate hanging around my neck and said, "Hey, are you Scott?"

"Yes", I replied.

"The one with the end zone thing on the web?"

"Yes".

"Cool!"

The guy was Dave Zimmerman, a frequent South End Zone visitor. He was so pumped to meet me, but not as pumped as I was to actually meet someone who had been to this web site. It was cool. We took our picture, savored the moment and said our good-byes.

I was one of the lucky ones to get a game program before the game. Bob and I went into the stadium around 10:40am, hung my South End Zone banner (in the south end zone, of course) and took our seats in section 21, row 9 seats 13 and 14.

Me with Bob I won't say much about the game since you saw it, but I will say that it was the greatest football game I have ever witnessed. The game, the stadium, the crowd, the history, you just can't beat it. It is truly a religious experience. And it was nice to look around and see that I was not the only fan crying as Brett Favre left the field near the end of the 4th quarter. We all, fans and team alike, had accomplished what we've been working for for 30 years. I'm 34 and I don't remember too much about the first two Super Bowls, but this I will savor forever.

After the game, I spent some time with my Mom, another one of the most devoted Packer fans in town.

Monday

Bob and I arrived at the WBAY studio downtown around 7:10am for the 9:00 taping of the Mike Holmgren show. We bullshitted around with the other fans in line and then went in for the taping. They actually taped two shows on Monday, since Coach Holmgren will be out of town next week. This was nice. His guests for the two shows were LeRoy Butler and Mike Pryor.

Here's just a couple of interesting things we found out during the show. Coach Holmgren said that guys like Robert Brooks (on IR) would definately get a Super Bowl ring. He was not so sure about Ken Reuttgers though. He said there might be some rule about full retirement during the season but he was probably going to find out this kind of stuff this week. I think we'd all agree that Ken deserves a ring. Maybe we fans could pitch in and buy him a ring to say thanks for all his years of dedication and service and for our appreciation of committment to the Green Bay Packers and the community. What a guy. We also found out that the city is starting to plan a parade for the Packers for Monday, January 27. It will start downtown and end at Lambeau Field. That's all they said. No word on tickets or times or any other details.

After stopping at Bosse's News Depot to get a Press-Gazette, News-Chronicle, Post-Crescent and Journal-Sentinal, Bob and I went to the Packer Hall of Fame. If you haven't been there, well I won't try to do it justice with my words. Just get there some time before you die.

It was while I was at the Hall of Fame that Don Banks of the Star Tribune (Minneapolis/St.Paul) asked me a few questions for an article he was working on.

Later in the day, we went to Kroll's West for lunch (same food as on Saturday), then we stopped by Packer City Antiques, I spent some more time with my Mom, watched some of the game on video tape and headed to Austin Straubel for my flight back home.

Man what a trip! I'll never forget it. I'm proud to call Green Bay home. And I'm proud to share a brotherhood with fans like you around the world. Thanks for making my visit to Titletown a special one.
