| With less than two minutes remaining in the game, the Dallas Cowboys had a first down on the Green Bay Packers' 2-yard line, but they failed to score and the Packers won 34-27 in the Cotton Bowl. The Packers jumped to a quick lead. Bart Starr threw a touchdown pass to Elijah Pitts. When Mel Renfro fumbled the ensuing kickoff, Green Bay's Jim Grabowski picked up the ball and ran it for a touchdown. The Cowboys came back to tie the score at the end of the first quarter, and two field goals left them trailing only 21-20 in the third quarter. The Packers stormed back, scoring first on a pass from Bart Starr to Boyd Dowler and then, with 5:20 left in the game, on a pass from Starr to Max McGee. It took the Cowboys a little more than a minute to score, on a 68-yard pass from Don Meredith to Frank Clarke. The Packers' next possession ended with a 16-yard punt by Chandler. Dallas took over on Green Bay's 47. On second down from the 22, Green Bay's Tom Brown was called for pass interference on Clarke in the end zone. That put the ball on the 2-yard line with 1:52 left. On fourth down, Meredith threw a pass that was intercepted by Brown in the end zone with 28 seconds remaining. |
