1965 NFL Championship vs. Cleveland Browns

Lambeau Field was cleared of four inches of snow, but a freezing rain turned the field into mud as the Green Bay Packers defeated the Cleveland Browns 23-12 and held fullback Jim Brown to 50 yards in 12 carries. Brown had led the NFL with 1,544 yards rushing during the regular season.

Packers runners Paul Hornung and Jim Taylor met with more success. Taylor never gained more than eight yards on a single attempt, but when the Packers controlled the ball for almost 14 minutes during two second-half drives to a touchdown and field goal, he was given the ball 12 times in 24 plays.

The Packers let 13-12 at half time of a game that had been as close as the score would indicate. The Packers scored the first time they got the ball, Bart Starr passing 47 yards to Carroll Dale. The Browns came right back, scoring on a touchdown pass from Frank Ryan to Gary Collins. The extra point was missed, however. The teams traded field goals the rest of the half. But in the third quarter, and 11-play 90-yard drive ending in Hornung's 13-yard touchdown run put the Browns too far behind to catch up.

"The snow and mud were our allies," said Packers' coach Vince Lombardi. "When you have conditions like these, it's best to be basic, not fancy. And we're the most basic offensive team there is."
