| The Green Bay Packers fought off the New York Giants in 13-degree cold and winds that gusted up to 40 miles per hour in Yankee Stadium to score a 16-7 victory for their eighth NFL championship and second in a row. The Giants lost in the championship playoff for the fourth time in five years and the tenth time in thirteen appearances. Offensive backfield coach Kyle Rote, who retired as a Giants player after the 1961 season, remarked "I never before saw a team that tried so hard and lost." The Giants concentrated most of their efforts on fullback Jim Taylor, who tied a record with 31 carries. Taylor gained 85 yards, scored on a seven-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and maintained a constant exchange with Giants defenders, challenging them to "hit me harder." The touchdown came late in the half, after Dan Currie tackled New York's Phil King, who fumbled on the Giants' 28, with the Packers recovering. On first down, Paul Hornung passed 21 yards to Boyd Dowler on a halfback option. On the next play, Taylor burst through the middle of the line to score. Although they outgained Green Bay 291-244 in total yards, the Giants never led. Their only touchdown came when the score was 10-0 in the third quarter. Erich Barnes blocked Max McGee's punt and Jim Collier recovered in the end zone for a touchdown. |
