1960 NFL Championship vs. Philadelphia Eagles

In his last game, Norm Van Brocklin had a little too much cunning and passing wizardry for the Green Bay Packers, as he led the Philadelphia Eagles to a 17-13 victory, marking the only championship loss ever for Vince Lombardi.

Billy Quinlan intercepted Van Brocklin's first pass on the second play of the game. The Packers gave up the ball on downs at the 5, but they regained possession when Ted Dean fumbled on the 22. Five plays later Paul Hornung kicked a 20-yard field goal. It was a key time for Philadelphia's defense -- two turnovers deep in their territory, and the Eagles had given up only three points.

Although Hornung sent the Packers ahead 6-0 with a field goal in the second quarter, Van Brocklin brought the Eagles back. Taking over on his 43, Van Brocklin zipped a pass to Tommy McDonald for 22 yards and a first down. On the next play, Van Brocklin floated a pass up for McDonald, who caught it on the 5 and scored to send the Eagles ahead 7-6. Bobby Walston's 15-yard field goal and a 13-yard miss by Hornung left the Eagles ahead at half time.

Green Bay took a 13-10 lead in the fourth quarter on Bart Starr's seven-yard pass to Max McGee. Dean returned the ensuing kickoff 58 yards to the Packers' 39. A holding penalty moved the Eagles to the 32. Dean made six yards and Billy Barnes followed with six for a first down on the 20. Van Brocklin was thrown for a loss of seven, but he recoverd with a 13-yard pass to Barnes. A run by Barnes and two by Dean put the ball in the end zone with 5:21 to play. But the Packers weren't dead. They drove to the Eagles' 22 with eight seconds left. Bart Starr passed to Jim Taylor, who reached the 8 before being dropped by Chuck Bednarik (who had played all 60 minutes) on the game's final play.
