| The Green Bay Packers won their third NFL Championship and their first in five years when they scored a 14-7 victory over the New York Giants, who were losers for the fifth time in seven championship games. The Giants had beaten the Packers 24-0 only four weeks earlier, assuring the New York team of the NFL's best record (8-1-1). This time, the Packers outgained the Giants 237-199 in total yards and scored both of their touchdowns in the second quarter on plays involving fullback Ted Fritsch. Fritsch scored on a one-yard run early in the quarter, following a block by right guard Charles (Buckets) Goldenberg, the Packers' 33-year-old, 12-year veteran. The touchdown came on fourth down after the Giants had held the Packers without a gain for three downs. Fritsch scored again on a 28-yard pass from Irv Comp. Don Hutson, the Packers' all-league end, figured prominently in the play. After Hutson gained 24 yards on a pass from Comp to put the ball on the 30, Hutson served as a decoy on the touchdown three plays later. He ran a crossing pattern from his left end position, drawing the Giants' secondary with him. Fritsch looped out of the backfield and caught Comp's pass on the 5. There wasn't a defender within 10 yards. For most of the game, New York was without the service of Bill Paschal, the NFL's leading rusher, who had hurt his ankle in the season finale. The Giants, who did not advance beyond their own 35-yard-line in the first half, scored on Ward Cuff's one-yard run in the fourth quarter. Cuff, who had played wingback in the Giants' Single-Wing formation for his entire eight-season career, scored from the tailback position. The touchdown was let up by a 41-yard pass from Arnie Herber to Frank Liebel. Herber, who had been out of pro football for three years before joining the Giants in 1944, played with the Packers from 1930 through 1940. |
