1939 NFL Championship vs. New York Giants

Winds blowing across the Wisconsin flatlands through the open ends of Milwaukee's State Fair Park were measured in gusts up to 35 miles per hour. The Green Bay Packers' passers, Arnie Herber and Cecil Isbell, were intercepted three times, but they completed 7 of 10 attempts for 96 yards and two touchdowns. Giants passers completed 8 of 25 passes for 94 yards and had 6 intercepted as the Packers scored a 27-0 victory.

The Packers scored on a 54-yard drive in the first quarter when Herber passed seven yards to Milt Gantenbein, who was open between the goal posts in the end zone after the Giants assigned double coverage to Don Hutson. The score was 7-0 at the half. New York had three scoring opportunities, but Ward Cufff missed field goal attempts of 42 and 41 yards, and Lem Barnum missed from 47. Cuff's first field goal attempt was set up when Jim Poole blocked Clarke Hinkle's punt and Jim Lee Howell recovered in Green Bay territory.

Paul (Tiny) Engebretsen put the Packers in front 10-0 with a 29-yard field goal in the third quarter. Joe Laws returned a punt 30 yards to his 45 and the Packers moved 32 yards in seven plays to position Engebretsen. The score became 17-0 after Gantenbein intercepted a pass by Ed Danowski at the Giants' 33. Cecil Isbell threw a 26-yard pass on second down to Laws, who caught the ball over his shoulder on the 5-yard line and scored to complete a 31-yard play.

Ernie Smith's 42-yard field goal and Ed Jankowski's one-yard run finished the scoring in the fourth quarter. The Giants were on the 5-yard line when the game ended. Their deepest penetration had been the 16 in the third quarter, when the score was 17-0.
