| The Green Bay Packers outgained the New York Giants 378-212 in total yardage, but the Giants' defense blocked two punts that led to nine points and a 23-17 victory. The crowd of 48,120 on a 31-degree afternoon in the Polo Grounds set a record. The first blocked punt came on Green Bay's second possession of the day. On third and 11 at the Green Bay 11, Jim Lee Howell blocked Clarke Hinkle's punt and Leland Shaffer recovered for New York on the 7-yard line. After three plays netted only 1 yard, Ward Cuff kicked a 14-yard field goal. Cecil Isbell's punt was blocked by Jim Poole with Howell recovering on Green Bay's 28 on the Packers' next possession. New York scored four plays later on a six-yard run by Alphonse (Tuffy) Leemans. Leemans caught one pass and carried the ball three times on the four plays. The Packers scored just before the half to cut New York's lead to two. An eight-play, 8-yard drive culminated in Hinkle's one-yard touchdown run. Green Bay took a 17-16 lead in the third quarter when it marched 53 yards to Paul (Tiny) Engebretsen's 15-yard field goal. The Giants began the following series on their 39-yard line. Halfback Hank Soar carried the ball on five of the next six plays. He threw an incomplete pass on the seventh, then caught a pass for nine yards from quarterback Ed Danowski, and ran three yards to put the ball on Green Bay's 23-yard line. Danowski lofted a pass to the goal line. Soar made the catch and dragged Hinkle over the goal line for the winning touchdown. |
