| The Polo Grounds was the site of the championship game, although the participating teams were Green Bay and Boston. George Preson Marshall, the owner of the Redskins, moved the game from Boston to New York to show his contempt for what he considered Boston's poor support of his team. The Packers dominated the Redskins to win 21-6. For the first time in the four-year history of the championshp game, the weather was not severe. The temperature was 36 degrees and the sun was shining. Boston's all-league halfback Cliff Battles, who gained 18 yards in his first two carries, was injured on the tenth play of the game. On that play, teammate Riley Smith fumbled Battles' lateral and Lou Gordon recovered for Green Bay on the Packers' 48-yard line. Three plays later, Arnie Herber completed a 48 yard touchdown pass to Don Hutson on a sideline pattern. Ernest (Pug) Rentner, the replacement for Battles scored the Redskins' only touchdown on the first play of the second quarter. Rentner gained 18 yards on five carries and completed two passes for 41 yards in a 10-play, 78-yard drive that ended with him scoring from the 2. Riley Smith's conversion attempt was wide, however, and the Redskins still trailed 7-6. Green Bay increased its lead to 14-6 in the third quarter on Herber's eight yard pass to Milt Gantenbein. A 52-yard pass play -- Herber to Johnny (Blood) McNally -- set up the score. The Packers' defense put the game away in the fourth quarter. Lon Evans blocked Riley Smith's punt on a play starting at Boston's 22-yard line. Clarke Hinkle recovered for the Packers on the 3-yard line. Bob Monnett, who was in the game for Herber, scored on the second play from the 2. |
