South End Zone Mailing List FAQ
(1) What is the South End Zone Mailing List?
It is an announcement only list that provides its subscribers with current Packer-related news, as well as commentary from several columnists. If you're a Packer fan, you will probably enjoy the content on this list.
(2) How do I subscribe to the list?
To manage your subscription (subscribe, unsubscribe, change e-mail address, etc.), you must login on the Yahoo Groups web site at groups.yahoo.com/group/SouthEndZone. If you don't already have an account, you can create one. I highly recommend having a Yahoo Groups account. With it, you can subscribe to thousands of groups and e-mail lists in thousands of different categories (I'm currently subscribed to 9 groups). You can even start your own group if you want. And it's all free!
(3) To subscribe, can't I just send an e-mail to Scott and have him add me and/or my friends to the list?
See question #2.
(4) How do I unsubscribe from the list?
See question #2.
(5) To unsubscribe, can't I just send an e-mail to Scott and have him remove me and/or my friends from the list?
See question #2.
(6) My e-mail address has changed. How do I change my subscription address?
See question #2.
(7) I need to unsubscribe, but my old e-mail address is no longer valid. How do I unsubscribe?
See question #2.
(8) Is there a web site with more info about the list?
Yes. It's at www.southendzone.com/list
(9) I have something to say, why can't I send messages to the list?
This is an announcement-only list. I am the only one who can send messages to the list. If you are interested in participating in e-mail discussions about the Packers, DO NOT send your messages to me; there are other mailing lists specifically for that purpose.
(10) Isn't there already a Packers mailing list? Why another one?
Actually, there are many other Packer-related mailing lists. But none provide the content that you can find here. My intent is not to "compete" with other lists. I have access to some good Packer-related content, so I am just offering a way to share it with Packer fans around the world.
(11) Some of the information I get from the list is copyrighted. Isn't that illegal?
No. That's a myth. It is not illegal to re-publish copyrighted works. It is only illegal if you do so without the author's permission.
(12) Why is the list hosted by Yahoo Groups?
I am using Yahoo Groups for a couple of reasons. One reason is that it is free. But the main reason is that as a list owner, it is easy to maintain and operate, and it does not require too much of my time. The list was previously hosted by ONElist, but ONElist merged with eGroups in April 2000, and then Yahoo swallowed up eGroups in January 2001.
(13) How much does the list cost?
Nothing.
(14) Will there ever be advertising in the list messages?
Perhaps.
(15) I would like to advertise my product to the list members. How do I do that? How much does it cost?
I'll be picky about what gets advertised here, but I do need to pay the SEZ web site bills too. If you're interested in advertising, send me an e-mail and we'll talk about it.
(16) Can I forward copies of the list to my friends?
No. The main reason for this is to keep list maintenance to a minimum. With well over 2,000 subscribers, every time I send a message to the list, several bounce. This means that the message comes back to me from an invalid e-mail address. If that happens, normally I would just remove that invalid address from the list. However, quite frequently, the invalid address is not on my list. This is because someone else forwarded the message there (either manually or automatically).
So, since the list is free to everyone, anywhere in the world, there is no reason why interested fans can't subscribe themselves. Also, in order to provide much of the content for the list, I had to obtain permissions from the various columnists. These arrangements do not allow me to transfer the permission to others. Please just ask any other interested fans to subscribe themselves.
(17) How much e-mail traffic is on the list?
Traffic will vary between the season and the off-season. You can expect several messages per week from the list during the season, and fewer during the off-season. It's really just based on what's currently going on with the Packers.
(18) Is there a way that I can receive only certain messages sent to the list?
The short answer is no. When you subscribe to this list, all list messages are sent to you. However, most good e-mail programs allow you to setup filters that will simulate what you're looking for. For example, if all you want are Jeff Ash's updates, you could setup a filter that puts all of his updates into their own folder, and then immediately after that filter, have another one that trashes all e-mail from this list. If you don't need Keith's weather forecast, just setup a filter that looks for "Packer Forecast" in the body (or it could look for "by Keith Brewster") and send that to your trash. The name of each column is included near the top of the body of each list message. So you can use that to setup your filters.
The key point here is that this list provides a lot of good news and information for thousands of Packer fans worldwide. It's not practical for me to setup many smaller lists to match everyone's individual needs. So, it's up to you to setup your own filters so that you get exactly what you want from the list. So, although the short answer I gave above is "no", the practical answer is "yes".
The possibilities are completely dependent on the capabilities of your e-mail program. So, be sure to get an e-mail program that matches your needs. I recommend Eudora (www.eudora.com).
(19) How many people subscribe to this list?
At last count, there are over 2,200 subscribers from 13 countries around the world.
(20) Will I get spam as a result of subscribing to this list?
No. Absolutely not! I am very sensitive to your need for privacy. If you are concerned about receiving spam as a result of subscribing to this list, you should look to two people for answers: me and Yahoo Groups (the provider).
For my part, I will NEVER sell, disclose or in any way give out your e-mail address to anyone for any reason. This list has one moderator, me. There are a few other people who contribute content to the list, and they don't even know your e-mail address. All content is sent to me and then forwarded to the list. Since I run the list, I may on occasion send out a message about a certain topic that I feel most Packer fans would be interested in. Rest assured that this is done in good faith, with good intentions, and without disclosing your e-mail address to anyone.
For the provider's part, Yahoo Groups has a policy against spam that you can read at their web site.
(21) What if I stop receiving messages from the list?
I've probably unsubscribed you for some reason. One reason that will definitely get you removed from the list is if your e-mail account starts sending me automatic messages saying that you are on vacation or something like that. I just don't have time to read such messages each time I send something to the list.
(22) How can I write to a Packer player or coach?
First, I am not aware of an e-mail address that would reach a member of the Packer organization. But you can reach them by postal mail at:
PLAYER NAME
Green Bay Packers
1265 Lombardi Ave
Green Bay, WI 54307
(23) How can I get an updated copy of this FAQ?
Send an empty e-mail message to "list-faq@southendzone.com", any time, 24 hours a day. Upon doing so, this FAQ will appear in your e-mail box in less than 1 minute.
(24) What if I have other questions about the list?
Just let me know by e-mail at <scott@crevier.org>. If I think others may also be interested in your question, I'll add it to this FAQ.
--------
I really enjoy maintaining my web site and this mailing list. And as you can probably tell from some of the answers in this FAQ, I really want to keep this list free for you, and I really want to keep my workload as small as possible. Those two things will allow me keep this going indefinitely.
This FAQ will be sent to the list periodically. Please forward a copy to anyone you know who may be interested in subscribing to this list. Hopefully it will provide enough information for them to decide if they want to subscribe.
